Acting Schools in Santa Fe, NM

College of Santa Fe

This is one of the acting schools in New Mexico that focuses on learning how to act through performance work. Through intense courses and participation in mainstage and studio productions, students study acting, voice, movement, scene study, script analysis, audition technique, acting for the screen and theater history. Students who choose the Musical Theater program also study music and musical theater acting and take private singing lessons, as well as additional dance classes (ballet, jazz, modern and tap dance).

Performance opportunities: All students can audition for mainstage shows, even first-year students. Actors also perform in student-directed shows, studio productions, recitals and workshops.

Career preparation: Students have an opportunity to learn from professional actors through master classes and work with professional guest directors on some productions. They can also build their acting reel by performing in student films through the school’s moving arts program. Actors have an opportunity to intern for professional theater companies and can spend a semester in New York or London.

Degree: BFA in Theater, BFA in Musical Theater.

Financial Aid: Students can apply for federal and state financial aid, as well as need, merit-based and talent-based scholarships. If you’re a NM resident, the governor’s scholarship covers 100% of tuition fees. There is also another full scholarship Santa Fe residents can apply for.

What you’ll need to apply: Application and fee, personal statement, transcripts and test scores, two letters of recommendation, interview and audition (consisting of 2 monologues or one monologue and verse from a Broadway song for musical theater applicants). Auditions are held throughout the country.

Acting Schools New Mexico – Albuquerque

The University of New Mexico

This is one of the acting schools in New Mexico where performers in training can choose between a concentration in acting or musical theater. Classes include acting, voice production, movement, dance, musical theatre acting, physical theatre, script analysis, acting for the screen, characterization, theater history and more, as well as a choice of electives like stagecraft, costumes or theater lighting design.

Performance opportunities: The University of New Mexico has 3 performances spaces, including a 400-seat proscenium stage theater. The school produces 5 mainstage productions each year, including 3 fully staged plays and a festival of original works, in addition to student productions and tours.

Career preparation: Actors take an audition technique class and prepare for professional work during an entire semester. They have opportunities to learn from guest speakers and work on productions with professional guest artists. Students also gain experience through the university’s outreach program and professional resident theater company, as well as through the multi-venue festival of original works.

Degree: BA in Theater.

Financial Aid: In addition to federal and state financial aid options, students can apply for institutional scholarships and scholarships available from the theater department.

What you’ll need to apply: Application and fee, transcripts and test scores, plus an additional application and interview for the College of Fine Arts. Acceptance into the theater major is based on an audition during the second year of studies.

Audition policy: Unlike some other acting schools in New Mexico and around the country, students are encouraged to audition for theater companies and professional venues outside the school.
